Life jacket control | Åland Online

Have you checked your life jacket?

At least once a year you should check your life jacket.
Many people think that a life jacket lasts forever,
but that’s wrong.
The Swedish Maritime Rescue Society has a ship called M/S Norrsken that sometimes goes around Sweden’s archipelago and shows and advises how
to check your safety equipment on the boat.
Last year, Sea Assistance collected a whole mountain of ineffective life jackets after parents were allowed to test them.

To test your life jacket yourself, you can lie down in the water with it on.

Important to remember:
  • Can you swim well in it?
  • Turns the head automatically up to the surface?
  • Do you float well?
If the answer is not yes to all three questions, you should replace your life jacket. It’s cheap life insurance!
There are many different types of life jackets.
The best for recreational boaters is the life jacket. The sailing vest is a little more flexible and cheaper, but lacks the important support collar which can lead to you ending up upside down in the water if you’re unlucky.
There are also vests that inflate themselves if you end up in the water.

More information

  • Lifejackets for recreational use are divided into three categories:
    50N, 100N and 150N.
Newton (N) is a measure of the carrying capacity. A human needs between 20-30 N to stay afloat.
The choice of life jacket is dependent on a number of factors such as type of waters, activity, age, etc.
The most secure vest is the life jacket. It is available in both 100 and 150 N.
What these have in common is that they have great buoyancy combined with a proper collar that holds the head up.
    Always use CE-marked life jacket!
